H1N1 - Great tips to keep you healthy
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is..
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know 20 who might pay attention to it

Rosalie Pelham
I have been it the sewing field for as long as I can remember and began free motion machine embroidery in 1981 by taking a
class at Napa Community College taught by Bambi Stalder. After a year I completed a certification class presented by Creative
Stitches of Salt Lake City, Utah and was accepted into the National Machine Embroidery and Instructors Association (NAME).
In 1985 I joined the California Association of Machine Embroidery, where I served on the board of directors of CAME for 10
years in the positions of Past President, Past Vice President and Seminar Director 2 times.
Following my sons to Reno 12 years ago I have enjoyed the sewing community ever since.
I am a free-lance sewing and machine embroidery instructor having taught in various locations while traveling with my husband
and have taught for CAME and NAME numerous times. I stay current in this chosen field by attending yearly advanced and
instructor seminars and teaching free lance for Truce Meadows Community College.
After retiring I found I missed the hubbub. I am now enjoying several days a week at Sew-n-Such and have started an monthly
“Explore Your Embroidery Club”. I enjoy most areas of sewing, except the ripping, but my all time favorite remains free motion
embroidery, a close second is Hoop system embroidery.
December 17th, 2008:
Nancy Stevens
My name is Nancy Stevens and I started working at Sew-n-Such in late July, working one day a week. I normally work on Tuesdays and fill in when one of the other ladies has a prior commitment. After the first of the new year, I will probably be changing my days to Wednesday.
My passion is sewing and I love to do garment sewing. I sew for myself as well as for my grandsons, and other family members. I also enjoy doing crafts and craft sewing. I have two wedding dresses to my credit, one for my daughter's wedding - 19 years ago and the other was for a friend here in Reno. I also enjoy doing repairs on items for friends and occasionally for customers who come into the store and need help with a sewing project.
I started sewing when I was in about 7th grade. I did not have any training until I entered my freshman year of high school when I took Home Economics. My grandmother was a sewer, but I do not remember her teaching me anything special. My mom did some sewing and purchased my very first electric sewing machine. From then on I have made many of my own clothes.
When I lived in Oregon, I took many classes from ladies at a local sewing store similar to Sew-n-Such. I used to make all of my mothers polyester slacks. I believe I gave away over 60 pair after she passed away. I have also made a man's sport coat and slacks to match. That was years ago. It is a pleasure as well as fun working at Sew-n-Such. I enjoy meeting all the customers that come into the store and love to see their completed projects. I am a member of Sew Club at Sew-n-Such as well as American Sewing Guild. The Guild holds a sit-n-sew called Koffee Klatch at the store on the 3rd Friday morning of each month. I look forward to meeting you at the store if I have not already had the pleasure.

OOPS! There were two errors in the current Sew-n-Times newsletter. There are always discount coupons in the newsletter, one for each month. But there are two May coupons and no June. Do not fear, we will honor a May in June. The other error is that Sew Club info was re-run from last years club and the correct info is in the front page article. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Hello from Kathie Dziurda: I have a class this Tuesday October 9th, 2:00-5:00 PM on Bobbinwork. We'll use the decorative stitches on your machine, heavy thread in the bobbin and sew "upsidedown" to create a new look. You'll learn how to adjust the tension on your bobbin case to accomodate these heavier threads that won't fit in the needle. Then we'll make a small Christmas ornament so we can show off our new accomplishment. :-) I'll also demo how to do computerized bobbinwork with the embroidery module.
Please call the store ASAP 825-6677 to register. Cost $25.00
